Ryan McCarl is the author of Elegant Legal Writing (book | blog) (Univ. Cal. Press 2024) and a founding partner of the business litigation firm Rushing McCarl LLP. He has taught advanced legal writing courses at the UCLA School of Law and LMU Loyola Law School and given talks about legal writing, appellate advocacy, and litigation strategy to audiences including the ABA Litigation Section and the Texas Office of the Attorney General.
Previously, Mr. McCarl was a Fellow in Artificial Intelligence Law and Policy at the UCLA School of Law, where he researched the use of artificial intelligence in the legal profession.
Before co-founding Rushing McCarl LLP, Mr. McCarl clerked for the Hon. David M. Ebel on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, worked as a litigation attorney at WilmerHale and Hueston Hennigan, and founded the educational technology startup WordBrewery. He earned a J.D. with Honors from the University of Chicago Law School, an M.A. in International Relations and B.A. in Political Science from the University of Chicago, and an M.A. in Education from the University of Michigan.
Mr. McCarl’s writings have appeared in the Cincinnati Law Review, Stanford Journal of International Law, Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly, Real Estate Law Journal, Daily Journal, and elsewhere.
